Clay pots provide the ideal growing environment for your plants because they are porous and allow the plant o breathe. Being mage from natural material, they are evironmentally friendly and look great too.

All out pots are frost resistant and with a little care will give you many years of service. If frost is a particular problem in your garden, glazed pottery is even stronger than terracotta, due to the type of clay used and their very high firing tempertature.

How to Plant in a Clay Pot

You need to ensure your plant is kept moist but never saturated, especially in winter, as in frosty weather this can damage your plant and your pot. So good drainage is vital.

First give your pot a good soaking with water. This will help keep the compost moist for longer
Next fill about 1/4 of your pot with crock (broken pieces of pottery), large stones or even broken up polystyrene plant trays. Make sure the drainage hole is not blocked.
Now fill the pot up to about 2cm (1") from the top, with a suitable quality compost. Garden soil is not advisable as it rarely contains the nutrients your plant requires and often offers poor drainage.
Finally, thoroughly water your plant.

Ongoing Care of your clay pot

For a lasting display don't forget to regularly water and feed your plant. In the summer use a matching saucer under the pot, which will act as a reservoir keeping your pot moist for longer.

In winter, remove the saucer and raise the pot off the ground with Mim's Pot Feet. As well as being attractive, they keep the drainage hole clear of the ground, enabling the pot to be well drained.

Over time moss may grow on the .surface of your pot. Sometimes a white deposit may also appear, which is due to salt in the clay or lime in the water. Neither of these will harm your pot and if preferred can be cleaned away using a stiff brush (or a cloth on glazed pots) and plenty of water. The use of chemicals is not generally advised.

Indoor Use
